The book contains a collection of photographs exhibiting a visual quality similar to that of backlit negatives, while the paper’s texture resembles that of a Xerox print. For the book I consciously used materials that both symbolise and are metaphors of the subject matter.

The ‘Illuminated Bread Book’ is born out of the original Bread Series, and both the book and the carbon paper prints go hand in hand. They have given life to each other through a portal of light, unveiling another existence, perhaps even another dimension. As the title suggests the ‘Illuminated Bread’ needs to be enlightened, in this way exposing something not visible to the naked eye.
The book starts with a quote by Pythagoras ‘The universe begins with bread’. Each image is printed on corn crush paper obtained from the corn industry’s industrial food recyclers. The book’s pages are divided by layers of brown baking paper. A single piece of toasted bread embellishes the black book cover, its golden hue emphasising the spiritual significance of this sacred subject. The book comes in a handmade card slipcase.
